Oral Language & Listening
Strengthen spoken language, listening comprehension and narrative skills that underpin vocabulary and comprehension.
A parent-and-school partnered programme that turns everyday conversations and classroom routines into systematic learning opportunities — increasing the vocabulary, listening stamina and story skills that children need to succeed with complex texts.
🧭 Purpose
The programme secures the spoken language competencies that support confident reading. We focus on expanding children’s vocabulary, strengthening sentence construction and developing coherent narrative skills so learners arrive at texts with the conceptual and language resources they need to understand meaning. Activities are designed to be classroom-ready and parent-friendly, ensuring consistent language exposure across home and school.
We also build listening comprehension and purposeful talk — skills that make vocabulary stick and comprehension reliable. Teachers and parents receive a shared framework for routines, assessment and progression so that home conversations reinforce classroom goals and classroom instruction respects the linguistic strengths children bring from home.
Evidence & Curriculum Alignment
Oral language and listening skills are strongly predictive of later reading comprehension and vocabulary breadth. This programme aligns with national reading standards and classroom learning outcomes, and it draws on classroom-proven strategies used in effective phonics and language instruction. Materials are adaptable for multi-grade classrooms and local languages.

Parent Pathway: Assess – Plan – Practice
1. Quick Home Check
A five-minute checklist parents can use to note sentence length, story retell and word use — non-technical and friendly.
2. Simple Family Plan
A 2-week roadmap with daily 5–10 minute routines: story retell, word play, and picture-based talk activities.
3. Daily Practice Ideas
Quick, engaging activities parents can do at home: word-of-the-day, 3-minute picture-describe, and evening story retell.
School Pathway: Diagnose – Teach – Track
Diagnose
Short classroom probes for retell accuracy, sentence complexity and listening inference — easy to administer and record.
Teach
Structured mini-lessons that progress from modelling and guided practice to independent story-building and oral performance.
Track
Simple tracking sheets and class rubrics that show changes in retell detail, vocabulary use and listening accuracy over short cycles.
Sample Lesson Snapshot
Sequence & Retell — 25 minutes
- Launch (5 min): Show a 6-frame picture story. Ask quick prediction questions to prime vocabulary.
- Model (5 min): Teacher demonstrates a 5-sentence retell using sequencing words (first, then, next, finally).
- Guided Practice (8 min): Small groups rehearse retell with picture prompts; teacher circulates and notes vocabulary use.
- Performance (5 min): One pair presents retell; peers ask one inference question.
- Home Link (2 min): Send a 3-sentence prompt parents can use to continue the retell at home.
Assessment Tools & Rubrics
Use brief, reliable measures that fit classroom flow: 3-minute retell rubric (content, sequence, vocabulary), listening probes (comprehension + inference) and a vocabulary usage log. Each tool comes with an interpretation guide for parents and teachers.
