- recognize sound similarities among words,
- improve decoding and oral reading fluency,
- develop confidence in speaking and reading aloud.
Diphthongs Covered
| Sound | Example Words | Hindi Sound Clue |

Teaching–Learning Materials
- Five chart papers or classroom corners labeled: /ei/, /oi/, /au/, /ao/, /eə/
- Word cards and picture cards
- Blackboard and markers
- Tape or sticky notes
Classroom Setup
Before the lesson begins, the teacher prepares five “Sound Family Corners” in different parts of the classroom. Each corner is labeled with one diphthong sound and an anchor picture or word:
- /ei/ → day
- /oi/ → boy
- /au/ → cow
- /ao/ → boat
- /eə/ → chair
Students are seated in a semicircle so they can clearly observe the teacher’s mouth movements and demonstrations.
Introduction (Warm-Up) – 5 Minutes
The teacher begins by speaking familiar words slowly and expressively.
The teacher models each sound: /ei/, /oi/, /au/, /ao/, /eə/. Students repeat in chorus.
Teacher Guidance
- focus on sound rather than spelling,
- exaggerate pronunciation clearly,
- encourage students to watch mouth movement,
- avoid introducing phonics rules too early.
Suggested line: “पहले कान से सुनो, बाद में अक्षर देखेंगे।”
Main Activity Procedure
Step 1: Sound Demonstration and Oral Practice – 5 Minutes
Teacher points to each sound corner and models one anchor word. Example: “This is /oi/ like boy.” and “बोलते समय आवाज ‘ओ’ से ‘इ’ की तरफ जा रही है।”
Step 2: Listening and Movement Activity – 8 Minutes
Teacher reads words (coin, bake, house, road, fair). Students move to the matching sound corner.
Guidance if learners are confused
- repeat the word slowly,
- stretch the diphthong,
- compare with anchor words (e.g., “Does coin sound like boy or day?”).
Step 3: Group Reading and Sound Stretching – 7 Minutes
Each corner group reads assigned words and stretches sounds (example: “c–oi–n”).
Step 4: Pattern Discovery – 8 Minutes
Teacher guides spelling-pattern noticing: oi/oy, oa/o-e, ou/ow, ai/ay.
Step 5: Sound Family Sharing – 5 Minutes
Each group presents one or two words (e.g., “We are the /au/ group. Our words are cow and house.”).
Step 6: Whole-Class Reinforcement – 5 Minutes
Quick oral revision using prompts like “Which sound family has boy?” and “Which sound sounds like chair?”
Assessment
The teacher observes whether students can:
- identify diphthong sounds correctly,
- move to the correct sound corner,
- read words accurately,
- participate confidently,
- notice common patterns among words.
